Annotations Environment, Genes and Mental Hygiene (p. 2) The article highlights the latest findings in the behavioral science. In the beginning of June 2003 a conference was held on the topic: fetal and infant origins of adult disease. The latest findings by Dr. Michael Meaney, Professor of Medicine at McGill University, in Montreal, Canada were presented at the conference. Meaneys data showed, that baby rats, which were licked by their mothers a lot turned out to be less anxious and fearful as adults and produced lower levels of stress hormones than those who were groomed less. In other words, the researchers discovered that the maternal care literally caused the infants brain to “crank up” a gene which fulfills the task of calming the individual in stressful situations. What makes Meaneys findings interesting for dog owners and especially dog breeders is that neonatal maternal care in rats and dogs are much more similar than in rats and humans. Both baby rats and dog puppies are born blind and deaf. Nevertheless based on the latest findings, the experts still believe that the fundamental principles are pretty much the same across the species. Portosystemic shunt in dogs (p. 5) The condition happens in the Irish wolfhound and other breeds of dogs. An abnormal blood vessel connects the portal vein to the systemic circulation and the waste does not move to the liver, where detoxication takes place, but returns to the main blood stream. The article gives information on kinds of Iivershunt, its clinical signs, diagnostics and possibilities of treatment, as well as on the diet for the dog having the condition. Problems Connected with Aerobic Bacteria in Genital Tracts of Bitches (p. 6) The basis for the research was a big quantity of bitches that gave birth to dead puppies or puppies that died soon after birth. There were also a lot of bitches that had pregnancy problems. The investigation that took place in the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy showed that in the vaginal tests of about 90% of the bitches aerobic bacteria were present. In most cases, there were Staphylococcus intermedius (analog to Staphylococcus aureus), it was present in milk, too; in other cases - Escherichia coli and Beta-hemolitic streptococci. Sometimes several infectious agents were present. The article gives information about the action of these bacteria, as well as about the ways of treatment the condition with the antibiotics. There are recommendations on the exact antibiotics to use. Remembering Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta (p. 16) In memoriam of the famous whippet, Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta. Bred and owned throughout his lifetime by Nev, Edith and Editha Newton of the world famous Nevedith Kennels, Jesta was the remarkable product of two equally remarkable parents. His sire was Eng.Ch. Pencloe Dutch Gold, the only whippet ever to go Best in Show at Crufts (in 1992), and his dam was the most notable whippet in the 100 year history of the whippet in England, Eng.Ch. Nutshell of Nevedith, breed record holder with 45 CCs all under different judges to her credit, and herself RBIS at Crufts in 1990. The excellent dog gave excellent descendants. The breeders have their own opinion about peculiarities of the black borzois - they own mostly dogs of this colour. They consider these dogs to be outstandingly clever and devoted to their owners. The kennel is very active in showing and coursing, as well as in the development of hunting qualities of the dogs of the kennel. The breeders try to preserve the old Russian type of the borzoi and to breed the dogs having excellent exterior together with excellent working qualities.
